Best tea for wind-down: trade the nightcap for a cup
A caffeine-free evening ritual for the hour you’d usually pour a glass of wine — so you wake up clearer instead of foggier.
A lot of us don’t actually want the drink at 9 pm — we want the signal. The “the day is over now” moment. Alcohol is the default, but it’s a lousy sleep aid and a worse morning. A warm, caffeine-free cup does the ritual part without the trade-off, which is exactly why the “sober-curious” and the “just cutting back” crowd keep reaching for it.
The caffeine-free herbs worth knowing
- Chamomile. The classic. Soft, apple-sweet, the one most people already associate with winding down.
- Lavender. Floral and calming in small doses; a little goes a long way before it tastes like soap.
- Lemon balm. A gentle mint-family herb traditionally used in evening blends.
- Rooibos. Naturally caffeine-free, rich and red; a satisfying “something in the mug” base.
- Peppermint. Caffeine-free and bright — good if you want the ritual without anything floral.
Building the wind-down ritual
- Make it a cue, not a chore. Same mug, same time, screens going down. The point is the boundary.
- Steep longer, hotter. Herbal infusions aren’t delicate like green tea — near-boiling water and 5–7 minutes pulls the most flavor.
- Caffeine-free means caffeine-free. Check the label — some “evening” blends sneak in green tea. Ours won’t.
The Neural Sauce take
Our Off blend is the other half of the brand: zero caffeine, built for the clock-out hour, every ingredient and amount on the label. If On is for the deep-work block, Off is for closing the laptop.
